The top 3 Reasons that I (as a Consumer) might stop following you on Twitter.



Many people will write to you for a “Social Media Consultants” standpoint on things to do (or not do) on Twitter to gain followers.  This is not a blog post of that nature.  This is simply a list of things of the reasons why your customers (or potential customers), such as myself, may stop following you on Twitter

3) If you have set up multiple Twitter accounts that feed the exact same information at the exact same time.

Simply put: I’m smart enough to figure out that you are the same person, and if you’re feeding the same content, what’s the sense in following both accounts  This merely clogs up my feed.  As you fellow Tweeple know, clogging up your feed with multiple posts of the same thing can get frustrated when you’re trying to keep up with the speed of Twitter!

                                 

I wouldn’t stop following you on ALL accounts, I would continue following you on one of these accounts, and stop following you on the other(s).

2) If you are a company tweeting about amazing deals for travel/technology/beauty/etc. and when I click on your link it merely brings me to your homepage where I have to sign up for your mailing list to even access your site. 

That’s just frustrating. For instance:


1)  Incessantly tweeting about reality shows, the current game that’s on, etc. (or anything else irrelevant to what your bio states you might tweet about)

I feel that there is a purpose for each Twitter account, if your purpose is to write about a specific topic, and you suddenly are tweeting every 3 seconds about who “didn’t get a rose” that evening, I will lose interest…very quickly. When you get to this point, you’re really just being a “Tweetaholic”

                                           

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the concept.  It’s a popular show or event, you know a lot of people are tweeting about it, but are those people that you actually want as followers?  It’s a vicious cycle, once you get those followers on board with your account, you have to keep up the (off topic based on your usual) tweets based on what you were talking about.  This then further diverts your path from your original plan from your Twitter account.  Before you know it, your account has morphed into people wanting content NOTHING like you originally set out for. 

Yes, I am one of the few people in the world that believes in quality of followers over quantity.  I also believe in having separate Twitter accounts based on what you are set out to discuss.  I think it’s perfectly fine to have a personal account in which you tweet about whatever you want.  Your friends are on there, plus any followers you gain based on every day conversation.  But your professional Twitter should be primarily focused on exchanging correspondence with colleagues and information on the subject that you focus on.  There are plenty of programs out there  (Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, to name 2 very popular programs) that help you manage multiple accounts in one place, so you can keep things very streamlined.
